The Jekyll Island Authority is pleased to announce that the bid to construct the first phase of the new Great Dunes Park on Jekyll Island has been awarded to a contractor from Edison, Georgia -- Southern Wilderness Construction.
Bids were opened yesterday, and Southern Wilderness was awarded the project based on their $1,733,000 proposal -- nearly a half million under the $2.2 million project budget.
"This is great news," said Jones Hooks, Executive Director, Jekyll Island Authority. "Not only does this represent a $467,000 cost savings that we can redirect for other projects to benefit public interests, but we're thrilled to share in the economic benefits with another Georgia company during these tough economic times."
A total of 13 bids were received. When complete, Great Dunes Park will be a beautiful and integral part of the future Jekyll Island Beach Village. It will welcome guests and residents to Jekyll Island with nearly 20 acres of beach front public green space, along with picnic pavilions, an event beach deck, a play area, beach access for the public and more.
The project also includes provisions for bio-swells to capture storm water run-off, treatment capacity for the water, dune restoration where appropriate, sea-turtle friendly lighting, environmental interpretive signs and even pedestrian-friendly markings throughout the entire beach front park.
The initial phase of Great Dunes Park is one of several projects that will bring about the revitalization of Jekyll Island as a preferred beach destination. A new Hampton Inn & Suites hotel will open in January, the first new hotel to open on Jekyll Island since 1974.
The official groundbreaking for the park will be hosted Dec. 7 along with a celebration for the revitalization of Jekyll Island, and the public is invited to attend.
