USGBC Recognizes 12 of Extra Space Storage’s Maryland Stores with LEED Gold Certification

Extra Space Storage Inc. (the "Company") today announced that 12 of its stores in Maryland received the LEED Gold Certification. LEED, or Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, is a green building certification program that recognizes best-in-class building strategies based on the effective use of materials and resources, energy efficiency, water efficiency, sustainable sites, innovation and other criteria. According to LEED, Extra Space Storage is the first storage company to certify properties at its Gold level.

"We are honored to be recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council with these 12 certifications. This marks another accomplishment from our ongoing dedication to sustainability and operational excellence," said Spencer Kirk, Chief Executive Officer. "We continue to focus on corporate responsibility and remain committed to reducing our overall impact on the environment. These efforts reflect our philosophy to leverage innovation to improve environmental and financial results."

The Company is committed to the sustainability of its operations. To enhance its portfolio, Extra Space Storage continues to retrofit its properties with energy-efficient lighting and motion sensors, installing solar panels and replacing fixtures with advanced lighting technologies that use significantly less electricity. The Company has also added charging stations for electrical vehicles in certain of its California facilities. With this focus, the Company is reducing its carbon footprint, saving energy and controlling costs while delivering benefits for many years to come. In addition to the 12 facilities that have already received the LEED Gold Certification, Extra Space Storage plans to have four more stores earn the certification by the end of 2015.
