The shadow trade and industry secretary, Alan Duncan, has called for an open-minded study of renewable energy and energy efficiency as part of a Conservative Party Energy Review.
The study, which is to cover the challenges facing the UK in terms of energy, will invite opinions from the public as well as experts and special interest groups.
According to Mr Duncan, the government's current review of energy policy is not wide enough. He considers that it focuses too strongly on electricity-generation, and not enough on the energy problem as a whole.
Mr Duncan said that energy is "one of the greatest challenges facing politicians today".
"The United Kingdom must take urgent decisions to ensure the future security of our supplies and the protection of our environment whilst dealing with affordability against a backdrop of rising fuel prices," he said.
Speaking to the Daily Telegraph recently, Mr Duncan highlighted renewables such as wave and solar power, saying they could now make "a much more significant contribution than in the past".
