Young British Designer Wins Award For Stylish Energy Efficient Lighting

The Energy Efficient Student Lighting Designer of the Year Award 2005, sponsored by the Energy Saving Trust, has been awarded to Simon Pattison from the University of Central Lancashire.

Constructed from polypropylene and bamboo matting, the winning floor luminaire has a unique architectural shape and twisted column effect. The design was drawn from the influences of modern day skyscrapers and the use of bamboo adds to the design's natural, eco-friendly image.

Frances Galvanoni, Trade Marketing Manager, Energy Saving Trust said; "Energy efficient lighting has the potential to have a huge impact on the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions in the UK, so it's important that consumers have a range of stylish and aspirational designs to chose from. New designs like Simon's 'Bamboo' lamp provide a wonderful opportunity to expand the use of energy efficient lamps in the domestic sector."

Simon comments; "It is often perceived that lighting has little impact on the environment, however, it is in fact enormous and has the potential to make a significant difference in the fight against climate change. Developing a stylish energy saving design therefore, to me, seemed an obvious solution."

Frances added; "Energy efficient lighting design has moved on considerably over the past ten years. It is great that young British designers are using energy efficient methods to create designs that are helping people to reduce their impact on the environment."

Organised by the Lighting Association for over 19 years, the Student Lighting Design Awards gives students the opportunity to gain a practical understanding of the lighting industry and use their imaginations and artistic skills to develop new lighting, whilst encouraging the installation of energy efficient fixtures and fittings.

Finalists have the opportunity to exhibit at the industry's premier event, The Lighting Show 2006 (22 -25 January) at the NEC Birmingham, which attracts over 21,000 visitors from the contract and domestic sectors.
