Officials from Deere & Company broke ground for the construction of a new tractor factory in Indore in the state of Madhya Pradesh in India. The factory will manufacture small size agricultural tractors which will be sold in the Indian market and exported to neighbouring markets.
During early 2011, the company announced expansion plans for its manufacturing facility and the construction of a new facility without naming the location. The company will invest $80 million for the setting up of the facility and is likely to employ around 1,000 local employees. Earlier this week, the company announced the setting up of a manufacturing facility for combines for harvesting at Chandigarh in the state of Punjab. Construction of the factory has already begun during October 2010 and full production is likely to commence by the end of January 2012.
According to the Deere’s Worldwide Agriculture and Turf Division, David.C.Everitt, the state of Madhya Pradesh is ideal due to its strategic location, business friendly regulations and cooperative government. The location is also close to farm equipment customers. Regarding the factory for harvesting equipment, he added that Punjab is the largest market for combines and is a leading grain and commodity producing state. The factory in Punjab is likely to employ around 300 workers. The company has many other facilities in India such as the Engineering and Technology centre in Pune, Water facility in Baroda and a joint venture with Ashok Leyland.
