The energy saving and eco-friendly characteristics of the Station at Othello Park, in Southeast Seattle have enabled it to achieve the LEED Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
It is the first mixed-use type of project on the Central Link light rail of Seattle to earn such certification. The station developed by USAA Real Estate Company and Othello Partners utilized sustainable green practices in the construction. The station is one among the 22 LEED Silver certified new constructions in Seattle.
The 420,000 ft2 mixed-use type of project designed by Hinthorne Mott provides a total of 351 one and two bedroom and studio apartment homes, a street level retail area measuring 20,000 ft2, a 7,500 ft2 rooftop deck and underground parking. The project completed in April 2011 is located on the corner of the busy South Othello Street and Martin Luther King Way South in Southeast Seattle is placed directly over the light rail line.
Some of the energy saving eco-friendly features that enabled the construction to achieve LEED Silver certification include, close proximity to all types of transport facilities to reach the places in the regional transit hubs, downtown core and South Seattle and adequate storage facility for electric cars and bicycles to enable clean transport facilities. During the construction, the building utilized over 25% of locally sourced materials within 500 km of the construction site and used low VOC materials and recycled and recyclable materials. It installed efficient day-light usage facilities and air circulation systems to improve the quality of inside air and used over 90% of non-hazardous wastes in the construction instead of sending them to landfills. The mechanical systems installed in the building utilizes nearly 23% less energy and the water efficient toilets and faucets conserve over 40% of potable water.
