Schlage is making a splash on two fronts at the International Builders’ Show (IBS), which opens today in Las Vegas and runs through January 22. The company is introducing a new line of SecureKey™ bump- and pick-resistant residential door locks that will make jobsites more secure and enable home builders to quickly change keys at any time during construction and is also previewing new home security features for its Schlage LiNK™ home-management and keypad lock system.
Demonstrations of both products will be ongoing during IBS at Schlage’s booth (C3142) in the Central Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center.
SecureKey: Simple and Secure
Unlike traditional pin-and-tumbler locks, which must be removed from the door and disassembled for rekeying, SecureKey locks and deadbolts employ a new high-security design that enables them to be rekeyed in seconds—without removal from the door and without compromising security. Security is actually enhanced through the use of a pick-resistant Grade 1 cylinder and a special locking sidebar that protects against lock bumping. The SecureKey design is 10 times more secure from key duplication than other rekeyable systems on the market.
Rekeying Schlage SecureKey deadbolts and locks is a simple two-step procedure that does not require extra tools. Simply insert the blue Reset Key included with every SecureKey lock, turn it to the 11:00 position and remove the key. Then insert a new blue Reset Key that matches the new keys for the lock, turn it back to the 12:00 position and you’re done. The lock is now rekeyed to the new key.
“The beauty of SecureKey is that in addition to providing greater security and convenience for builders and homeowners it saves time and money since no special skills are required to rekey a lock,” said Eric Deddens, Vice President of Sales and Marketing–Builder Channels for Ingersoll Rand, the parent company of Schlage. “Rekeying can be done by anyone and it takes seconds instead of minutes, which is significant for builders who need to manage keys for many homes during various stages of construction.
“With other rekeyable locks you have to insert a separate tool into a small hole located on the cylinder and make sure it’s pushed all they way in, which adds a third step and opens the possibility of a rekeying error,” explains Deddens. “With SecureKey, rekeying is facilitated by the Reset Key alone, resulting in a process that is streamlined, virtually fool-proof and more secure due to the unique key design.”
Other SecureKey benefits include:
- The lock cannot be forced into rekey mode with a generic tool or foreign object because the unique blue Reset Key must be inserted to rekey the lock.
- The lock is secure in the rekey position, which is not the case with other rekeyable locks on the market.
SecureKey locks cost the same as Schlage’s conventional locks and will be available in all styles of residential deadbolts and door locks, including handlesets.
Schlage LiNK: Affordable Home Automation
At IBS, Schlage is also previewing new capabilities for its Schlage LiNK™ home-management system that allow Schlage® wireless keypad locks to be integrated with residential security systems offering central monitoring.
Schlage will demonstrate how its wireless keypad locks can be integrated into a comprehensive home-security solution that works with a variety of security control panels, all through the Alarm.com platform. Consumers seeking a security system that works with Schlage’s wireless locks will be able to use the Alarm.com platform, which integrates professional security monitoring services provided by third party central stations with Alarm.com’s easy-to-use Web and mobile security and monitoring tools. The demonstrations will also highlight integration with other Z-Wave-enabled devices, including lighting and the Trane® Remote Energy Management Thermostat. Network cameras and a remote control that can be used to “enroll” Z-Wave devices into the system will also be shown.
Interactive home security and monitoring systems that incorporate Schlage wireless locks will be available later this year through Alarm.com’s nationwide network of licensed security dealers.
“We are pleased to be able to significantly expand the utility of the Schlage LiNK home-management system,” said Dwight Gibson, Vice President and General Manager, Connected Home Solutions for Ingersoll Rand, the parent company of Schlage. “The ability to integrate our wireless locks into a comprehensive security solution will bring a new level of simplicity to builders and homeowners alike.
“Schlage LiNK provides a profitable upgrade opportunity as well as a way for builders to distinguish themselves in the market,” Gibson said.
The Schlage LiNK System, which is currently available in more than 5,000 retail outlets nationwide, includes a wireless lock or deadbolt and is built around Z-Wave® technology, enabling homeowners to lock and unlock doors, monitor live camera feeds, and control temperature, lighting and other Z-Wave-enabled devices from any computer and most Web-enabled mobile phones, including Apple’s iPhone and RIM’s BlackBerry smartphones.
