The Shaw Group Inc. (NYSE: SHAW) announced today that its Power Group successfully completed a flue gas desulfurization construction program for a fleet of three coal-fired power plants in Maryland. The $1.1 billion engineering, procurement and construction contract was awarded to Shaw by Mirant Mid-Atlantic, LLC and Mirant Chalk Point, LLC in 2007.
Shaw installed four flue gas desulfurization systems to modernize seven coal-fired units – nearly 2,500 megawatts of electric generating capacity – at Mirant’s Chalk Point, Morgantown and Dickerson Generating Stations. Now in initial operation, the systems are capable of reducing sulfur dioxide emissions from these coal-fired electric generating units by up to 98 percent.
In addition to the flue gas desulfurization systems, Shaw provided engineering services for a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system for one unit at the Chalk Point Generating Station. This system, which began operation in 2008, is capable of reducing nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 90 percent.
“Shaw’s ability to maximize design replication across the three power plants resulted in significant material and equipment savings and allowed the project to be completed ahead of schedule,” said Fred Buckman, president of Shaw’s Power Group. “By equipping these coal-fired units with modern air quality control systems, we are helping our valued client provide cleaner energy to its customers for the foreseeable future.”
