Siemens to Install Baggage Handling Systems in Spain, Mexico and Hungary

Siemens Mobility has won orders to install airport logistics systems at small and medium-sized airports in Spain, Mexico and Hungary. These orders are worth more than 12 million euros. Siemens will be installing new or extending existing baggage handling systems at the airports in Murcia and Pamplona, Spain, in Cancún, Mexico and in Budapest, Hungary.

Aeropuertos Españoles y Navegación Aérea (AENA), the operator of San Javier International Airport in Murcia, Spain has ordered a new luggage processing and screening system from Siemens Mobility. The new system is due for completion within ten months. The project essentially comprises the extension of the present baggage screening system, with the work being carried out in several stages to enable the airport to carry on its normal business, and the modification of 18 check-in desks to cater to the extension of the departures hall. Siemens will also supply a SCADA control system as well as systems for video surveillance (CCTV) and fire protection. The new baggage handling system will also be able to process oversized or OOG (out of gauge) luggage items such as golf clubs without the passenger having to hand it in for separate processing.

The second order from AENA calls for the modernization of the baggage handling system at Pamplona Airport. The project is set to run for seven months and includes eight check-in desks for normal baggage and one check-in desk for OOG baggage. Besides an inclined carousel in the Departures area and two horizontal carousels in Arrivals, Siemens will install an OOG baggage handling line in both of these areas. This project likewise includes a SCADA system. Siemens will also assume responsibility for system maintenance for a period of one year.

Siemens Mobility has also received an order from the Mexican operating company Aeropuertos del Sureste (ASUR). The project at the Mexican airport of Cancún comprises the modification and extension of the existing baggage handling system in Terminal 2 as well as in the separate BHS (Baggage Handling System) building. The project is due for completion by the end of June 2010.

At Ferihegy Airport in Budapest, Hungary, Siemens will overhaul and extend the existing baggage handling system in Terminal 2, including the associated screening system. Siemens will handle the order in a consortium including evopro Informatics and Automations Ltd. The general contractor is KÉSZ Building and Construction Ltd.

These orders show that Siemens Mobility is a competent partner for small and medium-sized airports, enjoying the same level of customer trust as it does in the field of large-scale projects.
