Homeowners can help reduce landfill space and protect against pests while saving up to 20 percent on heating and cooling costs with Terminix R-Plus Insulation.
Eco-conscious R-Plus Insulation is made from 85 percent recycled newsprint and is bonded, in a patented process, with boric acid that helps eliminate pests. R-Plus is an Energy Star-rated pest control insulation and is proven to have more effective sound-deadening ability than traditional fiberglass insulation. Homeowners who use it could be eligible for a federal tax credit of up to $1,500.
Adding proper insulation is an investment that can often save the most on energy for the least amount of money. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, sealing your home and insulating your attic and crawlspace can save as much as 20 percent on heating and cooling costs.
"The savings are often most important, but the added pest protection and environmental benefits of R-Plus also give homeowners peace of mind," said Tom Brackett, Terminix president and chief operating officer. "Installing one 1,500 square-foot home with R-Plus Insulation recycles as much newsprint as a typical family will throw away in 40 years."
Because of its patented bonding process, R-Plus is an EPA-registered pest control product that targets self-grooming insects such as cockroaches, silverfish, ants and termites. As they move through the treated insulation they come in contact with the boric acid. Then later when these pests groom themselves, they will ingest the substance and are ultimately eliminated. While boric acid is deadly to most insects, it is generally harmless to humans and is a commonly used substance found in many household items such as eye drops, face lotion and even denture cleaners.
"Conservation and efficiency are very important issues when you consider our environment as well as our economy," said Brackett. "With Terminix R-Plus, consumers gain ground on both fronts, and additionally, add another layer of protection against insects to their homes."
The U.S. Green Building Council offers 25 points toward its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design green certification to consumers who use R-Plus Insulation in their business or home. LEED certification is the national benchmark for the registration of "green" buildings, and structures. The certification sets qualifying homes and businesses apart as being energy efficient and makes them more marketable to today's eco-conscious buyers.
