New Dorms Feature Fitness Centers, Theaters and Environmentally Friendly Energy Systems, Fabrics and Lighting
University Student Housing, LLC, in conjunction with West Chester University, celebrated the official opening of two new residence halls at the University's North Campus. The two residences, Allegheny Hall and Brandywine Hall, can accommodate more than 1200 students and feature the latest in student living amenities and environmentally sound building practices.
The new co-ed dormitories have a variety of suite styles to accommodate the living preferences of today's students and feature a host of amenities such as 35-person theaters, spacious lounges and study areas, fitness centers, free laundry, computer labs and large multi-purpose activity rooms. Apart from the amenities, the buildings boast state-of-the-art "Green" technology to save energy and reduce their environmental footprint. This includes a 170-well geothermal heating and air-conditioning system -- a renewable energy source, non-gaseous carpets, low-flow toilets and light-harvesting sensors.
"These new residences underscore our commitment to creating the best living-learning facilities for West Chester University Students," said Richard Przywara, Executive Director of the WCU Foundation and its non-profit subsidiary University Student Housing, LLC. "In addition, it was vital we ensured the buildings were environmentally friendly and energy efficient. The geothermal energy system, for example, will save millions in energy costs over time without polluting the environment or taxing finite energy sources."
The building of the new dorms is just the first phase of an ongoing development project at the University to replace some of the older residences on campus. Many of the current dorms are more than forty years old and would cost more to upgrade than to simply knock down and rebuild.
"Even though West Chester University provides a top-notch education at an affordable price, parents and students today still expect modern amenities and superior living facilities," said Przywara. "With the addition of these two residences and our future building plans, WCU will cement its place as not only a great place to learn, but also a great place to live."
