Miller Construction Opens New Sports Facility

Former England, Manchester United and Middlesbrough player, Gary Pallister was on hand at Acklam Grange School, Middlesbrough to officially open the £2.2m Acorn Centre. The Centre, which was built by Miller Construction, combines sport and fitness facilities for both school and local community use.

The project which commenced in April 2004, saw the construction of a new sports hall incorporating changing facilities; associated external works; a new car park and the relocation of the existing cricket pitch. All works were carried out while the school was in session and were programmed to create minimal disruption to the curriculum.

Garry Hope, Regional Operations Manager, Miller Construction, said: “Miller Construction has extensive experience within the education sector and we have enjoyed being involved in this project. The Acorn Centre will complement the existing sports facilities and fields at the school and will provide first-class facilities for local sports clubs and community groups.”

John Bate, Headmaster, Acklam Grange School, said: “The Acorn Centre will greatly benefit both the school and west Middlesbrough. We have been delighted at the work undertaken by Miller Construction and pleased with the programme which ensured that there was no disruption to school life.”

Gary Pallister was joined at the opening ceremony by Councillor Mrs Hazel Pearson OBE and the Chair of Governors at Acklam Grange. Craig Hobbs, who is co-ordinating activities at the centre, said: “It is tremendous for the school and community to have so many first-class facilities under one roof and we’re looking forward to seeing the Acorn grow and become an integral part of community life.”

Miller Construction is currently involved with a number of other projects for Middlesbrough Council; works are currently underway at Acklam Whin School, Lingfield School and Pallister Park School. In addition, Miller Construction is building MIMA, Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, which is due to open in 2006, and has completed two projects at the Dorman Museum.

Miller Construction completed The Acorn Centre on time and to budget. The entire project was completed in 10 months.
