St Leonards Primary School in Hastings is currently trialling Green Building Store's ES4 water-efficient toilet in a joint project run by Southern Water and the Environment Agency (partly funded by the European Union), which could save up to five litres whenever the pupils pull the chain.
Southern Water replaced seven of the school's existing nine litre toilets with the low flush 4.5 litre ES4 models and has been monitoring their performance since summer 2003.
Despite the much-reduced volumes, the new toilets designed by Elemental Solutions have performed to a much higher standard. They will also help the school financially as using less water will reduce bills.
Peter Highmore, Headteacher at St Leonards School said: "It has been a very worthwhile project and there have been no problems since they were installed.
"The new toilets have not only reduced water consumption, but previous problems with poor flush and unpleasant smells have completely disappeared."
