Skanska USA Building Inc., which has a reputation for waterfront revitalization projects, has started to build an 85-acre park along the Brooklyn waterfront. Brooklyn Bridge Park will extend residents' recreational access to the water's edge south of the Brooklyn Bridge for the first time in 200 years. The new park will run 1.3 miles along the East River and New York's great harbor and will tie together the neighborhoods of DUMBO and Brooklyn Heights.
Skanska will build on land that is now covered with asphalt, concrete and abandoned sheds, as well as rubble along the water's edge.
"Our team of designers, engineers and Skanska will turn industrial remains into vital public spaces: lawns, beaches, coves, restored habitats, playgrounds, sports facilities and landscaped gardens," said Regina Myer, President of the Brooklyn Bridge Park Development Corporation.
Skanska is part of one of the largest construction companies in the world. Its New York office is also the construction manager for several segments of the five-mile-long Hudson River Park in Manhattan. Skanska is committed to sustainable design and construction and is a global knowledge leader in green building.
Approximately 85% of Brooklyn Bridge Park will be complete by 2010. The park is expected to be fully complete in 2012.
Brooklyn Bridge Park Development Corporation is a Subsidiary of Empire State Development, New York's chief economic development agency, encompassing business, workforce and community development. ESD also oversees the marketing of "I LOVE NY," the State's iconic tourism brand.
