Construction minister expects Scots parliament to cost £500m

The construction minister, Nigel Griffiths, has predicted that the final bill for the Scottish parliament in Edinburgh will blow out by £70m to £500m.

He places the blame for cost increases with incompetent public servants. Griffiths said: "It is a classic case of very bad political leadership by the committee in charge of the project. They interfered at every stage and left us with a mess to clear up. I think the staggering level of incompetence of the committee that oversaw it will be exposed by the inquiry, and is being exposed." He also added that the image of the Scottish parliament had been done "no favours at all" but felt that "In a decade we will look at the it as a showcase building we can be proud of."

RIBA president George Ferguson reflected his optimism for the building expecting that upon completion it will be “a startling and brilliant building”.
