Steelcase, Global Leader in Sustainable and Eco-friendly Furniture Design Joins with River Cottage Canteen

Steelcase, global leader in sustainable and eco-friendly furniture design has joined forces with celebrity TV chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall.

Hugh’s River Cottage canteen will be a key attraction at Eco-build, Europe’s largest sustainable design event which is being held later this month in London. When River Cottage and Satellite Architect were asked to design a canteen for Eco-build, they immediately thought of Steelcase to provide the furniture.

Steelcase are providing the Canteen with the B Free Lounge and Westside chairs.  The Westside chair is 97% recyclable and designed to be made with minimal waste, energy consumption and environmental impact. - perfect collaboration with River Cottage and Eco-build’s core values. Similarly the different components of the B Free lounge, the beam, high table and cube are all at least  90% recyclable by weight and have been designed to use the minimum possible number of materials.

For nearly a decade Steelcase has been championing the need for environmental responsibility and applying design expertise to create innovative products with reduced environmental impact as part of their global commitment to sustainable business practice.

Adopting a cradle to grave  approach, Steelcase pioneered the use of Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) and now leads the industry in award winning environmental practices that account for a product’s environmental impact in each stage of its life cycle - the materials that go into it, the effect of its production and transportation, through to the end of the products life. This resulted in reduced packaging, water consumption, and energy consumption.

In line with their approach and to ensure that their furniture continues to be eco-friendly even at the end of the product’s life, Steelcase have also entered into a UK partnership with Green-Works, the not-for-profit social enterprise with a zero landfill policy, who run take-back initiatives which see old furniture removed from offices and re-distributed for re-use by schools, charities and community organisations.

Eco-build exhibition takes place at Earls Court, London 26th - 28th February and will see over 20,000 visitors and 500 exhibitors all with the same commitment to an eco friendly ethos in sustainable design, construction and the built environment.
