Alowood Environmentally Responsible Organically Hardened and Colored Wood Named One of 2007's Most Innovative New Building Products

Alowood, an organically hardened and colored wood offering an environmentally responsible alternative to scarce and expensive hardwoods, was recently recognized by Architectural Record as one of 2007's most innovative new building products. Alowood was chosen for this honor by a group of product experts assembled by Architectural Record; including architects, lighting designers, and product designers.

Juror's were swayed by products that are "beautiful with a purpose," or "that embrace the use of technology together with something performative." writes Rita Catinella Orrell, products editor for Architectural Record. Alowood is featured as one of 14 products in the "Metals, Woods, Plastics & Composites" division in the publication's 35th Annual Product Reports.

Alowood replaces expensive, high-demand, or increasingly scarce hardwoods such as ebony, rosewood, and walnut, using a relatively simple process. Starting with plantation-grown, sustainable lumber, the wood is organically hardened and colored throughout with the patented Everdex technology. A starch-based additive is forced into the wood using vacuum and pressure infusion; the wood is then thermally cured, permanently locking in the additive. The result is a natural wood that is denser, stronger, and harder than the original wood, and can be produced in virtually any color.

The Architectural Record Product Reports are included in the publication's December 2007 issue.
