In the Fall, while driving down the NJ Turnpike, what strikes you are the sunflowers that grow as prolifically as ragweed along the side of the road through cracks in the pavement. In an urban setting, sunflowers can be viewed as a symbol of hope and survival. A few miles away on the Newark/South Orange border is Ivy Hill Park, a metaphorical sunflower. The renowned Olmsted Brothers designed this 19-acre Essex County park, first established in 1927. Located on the park's edge, is the Ivy Hill Park Apartments built in 1952.
Ivy Hill Park Apartments is New Jersey's largest privately-owned apartment complex, and is home to 10,000 people residing in 10 high rise buildings of 14 stories each. It has always been affordable and well maintained, and is home to residents from 40 countries. Recently the managers decided it was time for a "makeover". Two designers from MGT Design of Watchung, NJ, who worked in Newark during the early 90s and quite familiar with the Ivy Hill area, were excited about the opportunity of getting involved with this project.
MGT Design is a design consultancy and is currently working on the re-branding project of the Ivy Hill Park Apartments. Anne Giacalone, Principal of MGT Design, states, "What struck me first about the Ivy Hill Park Apartments were the meticulous gardens. It signified pride in the place." The lovely gardens, serene walkways, the interesting history, and the overall diversity of the residents who call it a "little United Nations," served as inspiration to the designers.
MGT is currently designing a wide variety of materials, including a new logo, outdoor banners (including one with a sunflower motif), a web site with a virtual tour, a "Sense of Place" booklet and brochure, new signage and master color palette, and an updated look and feel for selected interiors including the administration offices. The building entrances will also be revamped as part of this makeover endeavor.
This effort is intended to enhance the complex called Ivy Hill Park Apartments, building upon its rich and diverse heritage, while looking forward to a successful future.
