Solar Cities to be Rolled Out Across Australia

The Australian government has announced a $75m government pilot scheme that will begin with Adelaide becoming Australia's first "solar city".

As part of the programme energy consumption will be reduced and solar energy introduced via 1,700 solar panels and 7,000 smart electricity meters in businesses and homes. will be installed in homes and businesses in several of the city's suburbs in a drive to cut energy consumption.

After Adelaide the programme will be rolled out in Townsville, Alice Springs, Blacktown and Central Victoria. If successful, the trial will be extended to other areas. In total nearly 250,000 residents and businesses are expected to take part and 3,400 solar panels, 15,000 smart meters and 4,100 solar hot water systems will be installed.
