When it comes to sustainability, everyone who works in construction know they have a major part to play but with some doubt about what this buzzword actually means, there is industry-wide confusion as to how this issue can even be addressed.
Construction industry professionals can now call on the knowledge of Baggeridge Brick, the UK’s largest independent brick manufacturer, following the formation of its in-house Sustainability Committee.
The aim of the Committee, which brings together the expertise of Baggeridge’s technical, design, production, sales and marketing departments, is to identify what customers need in terms of guidance regarding green practices and supplying them with relevant information.
The Sustainability Committee is headed up by Alison Adderley, Baggeridge’s commercial manager she comments: “Just twelve months ago, our customers used to ask us questions regarding the environmental performance of our products but the issue of sustainability wasn’t high on their agenda.”
However, with reports stating that construction itself produces one-third of all UK waste, the introduction of the Code for Sustainable Homes and the Government’s call for all new homes to be zero-carbon by 2016, construction professionals know they have a responsibility to go green, and fast.
Alison continues: “Regulations regarding sustainability have come into force at such speed that, although our customers know they have a duty for environmental compliance, they just don’t know what they need to do to, or what products they should be using, to help them on their way.
“Sustainability is now an issue that affects everyone down the supply chain which is why it is important to arm our customers with as much information as possible. As the UK’s leading independent brick manufacturer, we feel it’s important to have this dedicated service to help our customers become as green as we are.”
