Casa y Comunidad: Latino Home and Neighborhood Design, published by BuilderBooks, the National Association of Home Builders' (NAHB) book publishing division, and edited by Henry Cisneros, was named a silver medallion winner in the 2007 Benjamin Franklin Awards in the category of business publications. The award was presented in New York City last month on the eve of the BookExpo America held during the 2007 Publishing University.
The Benjamin Franklin Awards, [tm] sponsored by Publishers Marketing Association (PMA), the trade association representing the Independent Book Publishers Association, recognize excellence in editorial and design. Publications are grouped by genre and are judged by representatives from all sectors of the industry including major newspaper and trade media reviewers, bookstore and library buyers and reviewers, non-competing publishers, artists and writers who serve the industry.
Casa Y Comunidad: Latino Home and Neighborhood Design, published by BuilderBooks in 2006, takes the first-ever look at the state of Latino homeownership. A comprehensive resource, the publication provides readers with a series of essays on topics such as the demographics of Latino homeownership, community, home design, and affordable housing. Packed with colorful photos, graphics, and success stories, the book provides strategies for doing business with Latino home buyers. The publication takes a look at the impact of the swelling U.S. Latino population, which is estimated to grow by at least 60 percent by 2020 and how this will change the housing market.
"This ground-breaking publication prepares the housing industry to better understand Latino home buyers, the nation's fastest-growing and increasingly prosperous minority group," said Brian Catalde. "Cisneros bridges the gap in the industry's understanding of the Latino housing market."
Cisneros served as Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development under President Clinton. He is credited with initiating the revitalization of many of the nation's public housing developments by formulating policies that have contributed to today's record homeownership rate. He currently serves as the chairman of the CityView companies, community-building firms dedicated to producing workforce housing in America's cities.
