UK construction industry encouraged to only use sustainably grown timber

UCATT, Britain's construction workers' union and environment group Greenpeace have moved to stop building firms in the UK supporting illegal logging and the destruction of the world’s remaining ancient forests. They are to publish and distribute a report that encourages contractors, local authorities, housing associations and property developers to only use sustainably grown timber certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.

The UK is currently the largest importer of illegal tropical timber in Europe, with approximately 60% of all UK tropical timber imports coming from illegal logging and 70% of this timber is used in construction. These logging operations occur in some of the world's most important rainforests, including the Amazon, Indonesia and central Africa.
