Meeting the Legal Requirements of SWMP

All construction projects over £250,000 in England and Wales in 2008 are likely to require by law a Site Waste Management Plan (SWMP). And with 13 million tonnes of completely unused building materials being discarded as waste each year, this is set to have a major impact on the construction industry.

With this in mind, Envirowise has been holding a series of regional workshops in order to help construction companies implement SWMPs before their planned enforcement next year.

Originally developed as a DTI Voluntary Code of Practice, SWMPs provide a structure for systematic waste management at all stages of a project's delivery. Envirowise's workshops give a valuable insight into how to best prepare for the legal requirements of SWMPs for

  • site engineers,

  • managers,

  • foremen

  • and surveyors.

They also inform planners and contractors of their value in contributing to sustainability targets.
