This year’s Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for the UK construction products industry highlight a further dramatic reduction in work related accidents in this sector. The 2006 results show a reduction of almost 20% in the numbers of accidents over the last 12 months, coming after a reduction of nearly 30% in the previous year.
Commenting on the results, Rita Singh, Environmental and Industry Performance Director said: “A reduction in reported accidents of nearly 50% in just two years is fantastic and reflects extremely positively on the industry. There is always room for further improvement but we are encouraged by the results and demanding targets that many sectors are now setting themselves”.
The KPIs also show a significant improvement in energy efficiency throughout the industry, which is a direct response not only to increasing energy prices, but also the growing concerns about climate change.
Speaking about the report, Keith Folwell, Senior Statistician for Construction Market Intelligence at the UK Government's Department of Trade & Industry (DTI), said: “I very much welcome these latest results from the Construction Products Association. It’s good news that the industry is measuring and reporting on performance and companies can see a real benefit from the process. While no-one will be satisfied until accidents are zero, the health and safety improvements are a huge step in the right direction. The ability to demonstrate success in this way should provide a real incentive for other companies to sign up to the KPI scheme”.
Other areas where the industry is showing positive progress is the way customer satisfaction with products is improving and they are regularly scoring manufacturers eight out of ten or more in terms of products providing value for money – an increase of 15% on last year’s survey results.
Commenting on the overall results, Rita Singh said: “One of the most pleasing aspects of the 2006 survey is the significant increase since last year in the number of firms participating in and using the industry KPIs. These are now the benchmarks against which firms in our industry and the customers who purchase their products should now judge performance”.
