The UK building industry is considering creating a Green Building Council that will work to make buildings more environmentally-friendly.
Modelled on the highly successful US Green Building Council (USGBC), the coalition would pull together various groups concerned with tackling issues such as carbon emissions.
It would provide a means for more effective dialogue with government, and, should it emulate the success of the USGBC, would stimulate competition in the green building sector.
Lower environmental impact products are being produced due to the existence of the USGBC, which boasted over 10,000 delegates at its annual conference last year.
The proposals come at a time when the US has called on the private sector to do more to meet the challenge of climate change. "This matter of greenhouse gas control is one that we all share," said US Energy Secretary Sam Bodman.
The scheme would be led by BRE Environment head Dr David Strong, who called it "potentially hugely important".
Dr Strong also noted the need for such an organisation, illustrated by pledges of support already received by interested parties.
RIBA Sustainable Futures Group head Bill Gething reiterated the point: "What the industry does need is an organisation that pulls it together".
