VIA Rail Canada Launches Renovation Project to Transform Brockville Station

Today VIA Rail Canada (viarail.ca) officially launched an extensive renovation project which will transform its station in Brockville.

The Honourable Senator Bob Runciman, Gordon Brown, Member of Parliament of Leeds-Grenville, David Henderson, Mayor of Brockville, and VIA Rail's Magdy Fahmy, Senior Director, Capital Projects attended an event at the station, marking the beginning of the work.

Renovations to the station, originally built in 1872, include a new roof, a new building envelope, and new lighting and finishes, door and window replacement, the installation of an automatic door and other accessibility improvements for people with disabilities. As well, a building adjacent to the station will be demolished and a passenger shelter will be built in its place. The work is expected to be completed by November 2014 and will create 12 full-time and part-time jobs.

The renovations to Brockville station are part of a nation-wide project to improve VIA Rail stations and infrastructure. The work is being funded through the Government of Canada's capital funding, totaling over one billion dollars since 2007, the largest investment of its kind in VIA Rail. This investment stimulates the economy through job creation, skills development and private sector activity across the country.
