SmartAmerica Challenge: IEEE to Illustrate Expanding Intersection of Smart Homes and Building Architectures

IEEE, the world's largest professional organization advancing technology for humanity, announced today it will illustrate the expanding intersection of smart homes and building architectures as part of the ongoing SmartAmerica Challenge.

Team members from the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) Industry Connections (IC) Activity on Convergence of Smart Home and Building Architectures (CSHBA) will be presenting demos at the SmartAmerica Expo on June 11, 2014. The demos aim to show how the cyber-physical systems making up the Internet of Things (IoT) can help spur new business opportunities in the U.S., opening the door to greater economic prosperity.

“The Internet of Things represents a vast landscape of amazing potential; we are just now beginning to grasp how truly far the growing convergence of many traditionally standalone applications and cyber-physical systems can take us,” said Oleg Logvinov, chair, Convergence of Smart Home and Building Architectures Activity, IEEE-SA Industry Connections; and director, special assignments, Industrial and Power Conversion Division, STMicroelectronics. “As the Internet of Things advances, it will give rise to extraordinary opportunities to improve the overall health, safety, and quality of life for millions around the world while increasing the efficiency and saving energy. The SmartAmerica Challenge is a great opportunity to demonstrate how new technologies can positively impact our lives.”

A White House Presidential Innovation Fellow project, the SmartAmerica Challenge was launched in December 2013. Managed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the challenge brings together more than 65 disparate companies, government agencies, and academic institutions organized in 24 teams. Teams will show how the IoT and the introduction of smart technologies will deliver tangible benefits across a broad spectrum of areas, including cities, homes, and emergency response systems; healthcare; power, energy, and water; robotics; transportation; and more. The project culminates on June 11, 2014 with the SmartAmerica Expo at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C.

In its “Secure SmartHome” demo, IEEE-SA IC-CSHBA will illustrate how to leverage Near Field Communications (NFC) enabled smart phones to both establish encrypted communications and pair various smarthome devices. The presentation will highlight how end users can prevent attacks against connected devices via a NFC-enabled smart phone, removing the need to type in lengthy, complicated security keys or use potentially unsafe default keys. Additionally, IEEE-SA IC-CSHBA will demonstrate how the functionality of existing devices can be extended to support new smart home applications.

Through its Industry Connections program, IEEE-SA also helped unite the SmartAmerica Challenge with some of the leading innovative, forward-looking individuals and organizations in the U.S. Now celebrating its fifth anniversary, the IEEE-SA IC program is dedicated to incubating new technologies, standards, and related services through consensus-based collaboration and the production of shared results. It is working to advance the nascent IoT through a variety of activities, including the upcoming IEEE-SA IoT Workshop. IEEE-SA IC-CSHBA Activity members taking part in the SmartAmerica Challenge will also be featured speakers at the workshop.
