The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has awarded Michael Baker Engineering., Inc., a unit of Michael Baker International, a four-year, $8.0 million dollar contract to provide comprehensive construction engineering and inspection (CEI) services for the $122.8 million Greensboro Western Outer Loop.
The 3.9-mile, six-lane, freeway provides critical links to anticipated high growth areas around Piedmont Triad International Airport and in Northern Greensboro, North Carolina. This important contract facilitates Baker’s growth in the regional construction services market, in particular, with NCDOT-Division 7 and the City of Greensboro.
“We are pleased to continue our lengthy relationship with NCDOT and look forward to providing exceptional construction services on this important project,” said Baker’s Chadwick Huffines, P.E., regional construction services manager for North Carolina and Tennessee. “The complexity of the numerous structures along with the environmental sensitivities in the project site will require both our capacity and expertise to strongly support NCDOT’s well-established CEI program, and to exceed expectations.”
“NCDOT looks forward to partnering with Michael Baker Engineering for a successful project,” said Brian Smith, resident engineer for NCDOT Division 7.
The Greensboro Western Outer Loop project is part of The Greensboro Urban Loop program, NCDOT’s plan to build an urban loop around Greensboro to improve traffic flow within the city. The project includes construction of a single point urban interchange (SPUI), and eight bridges. Baker’s CEI services include surveying grade verification, field materials sampling and testing, documentation of pay quantities, claims avoidance, and technician level contract administration for construction.
“The Western Outer Loop project is vital to support the community growth demands of the Piedmont-Triad,” added Baker’s Terry Callahan, Mid-Atlantic regional construction services manager. “Baker’s selection for this project strengthens our commitment to support NCDOT, and demonstrates the expertise of our team for this high-profile urban loop project.”
