Consumers Energy to Complete $5 M Bay City Utility Project

Consumers Energy is completing major project work next week on a $5 million utility project to support the Uptown – Bay City development in downtown Bay City.

Work scheduled for Monday, June 24, includes removal of an electric transmission wire over the Saginaw River, weather permitting. The U.S. Coast Guard must close the river for this work and has issued notifications. Separately, an electric transmission tower on the east side of the river is scheduled for removal on Wednesday, June 26.

Consumers Energy’s vice president of energy delivery, Garrick Rochow, said the utility was pleased to work with the city and support such an important economic development opportunity for Bay City.

“Helping communities grow and thrive is part of our promise to Michigan. We are committed to the Great Lakes Bay Region and we’re ready to do our part to help create jobs and promote economic growth in Michigan,” Rochow said.

Christopher Shannon, the mayor for Bay City, said the completion of the Consumers Energy major project work was an important milestone for the Uptown – Bay City project: “The construction of the new underground electric system in the development area is a key step in making the Uptown – Bay City project become a reality. I’m sincerely appreciative of the partnership efforts of all involved and grateful for the huge way that Consumers Energy stepped up to support this vital economic development project.”

The project, funded jointly by Consumers Energy, SSP Development and Bay City, has involved the installation of underground electric lines and replacing overhead lines. Consumers Energy’s project is part of the overall plan for the Uptown – Bay City development, which is anticipated to have an investment of about $50 million in its first phase.

Consumers Energy, the principal subsidiary of CMS Energy (NYSE: CMS), provides natural gas and electricity to 6.6 million of Michigan’s 10 million residents in all 68 Lower Peninsula counties.
