Harper Government Announces Investment to Upgrade Saskatoon’s Community Infrastructure

Today, the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced support for two projects at Prairieland Park under the Harper Government's Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).

"I am very pleased that our Government is supporting these two projects at Prairieland Park," said Minister Yelich. "These investments benefit Canadian families and communities immediately, helping to support job creation, boosting economic activity, and creating accessible community infrastructure facilities for years to come."

The Harper Government's investment of $340,300 will support improvements to Saskatoon Prairieland Park, including upgrades to the convention facility and the Marquis Downs grandstand. The main foyer of the convention facility will be renovated to enhance the safety and energy efficiency of the building, thereby reducing operating costs and modernizing the facility. The mechanical and electrical systems at the grandstand will also be improved, in addition to renovations to its washrooms and flooring.

"Prairieland Park is honored to receive funding from the Government of Canada through the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund," said Mark Regier, CEO, Saskatoon Prairieland Park Corporation. "The opportunity to upgrade and make major improvements to the Trade & Convention Centre main entrance and to Marquis Downs will definitely generate added value to our events and provide lasting benefits to our community."

In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supports projects that look to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities.

Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating small and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
