Greener Fuel For Cement Works

A Peak District cement works is participating in a trial to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases it produces.

For the next six months Hope-based Lafarge Cement UK will use a new alternative fuel, which should reduce the amount of emissions created. The Environment Agency-backed scheme will hopefully see the company replace 30 per cent of its normal fossil fuel with MBM, a new product made from meat and bone meal.

A spokesman told the Yorkshire Post: "Using MBM is an important step for us as it will help the plant to achieve new greenhouse gas reduction targets which were introduced by the government earlier this year.

"Staying competitive is essential to protecting the 200-plus highly skilled jobs that we have here and the £10 million we contribute to the local economy every year."

He also explained that reducing the amount of fossil fuels used was good for business, since fuel is one of the main costs involved in making cement.
