Turner Construction Company, a builder in the U.S., has been selected by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Los Angeles District to construct the Fort Irwin Replacement Hospital in San Bernardino, California.
The Weed Army Community Hospital will be replaced by this new hospital, which cost about $160 million. The hospital is an important milestone in the United States Department of Defense to provide best healthcare services to service members and their families.
The hospital is about 216,000 sq. ft. and consists of emergency medicine, clinical support and tertiary care. In addition to this, the project will renovate the Mary Walker clinic of about 9,000-sq.ft and will include construction of a central utilities plant, an ambulance shelter, a photovoltaic farm and a helipad in order to provide sufficient energy to ancillary buildings and hospital.
The world class design principles will be adopted for designing the hospital. This hospital will be constructed to achieve LEED Platinum certification. Design services for this project will be provided by Ellerbe Becket/RLF Joint Venture.
Chris Jahrling, Vice President and also the General Manager of Turner's Federal Services group in Washington, D.C, stated that this project is an important achievement for their company since it increases the company’s reputation as a prominent builder of government healthcare units. Jahrling further added that they are very delighted to work with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
The company is also constructing the Department of Veterans Affairs Denver Replacement Hospital in Aurora, Colorado in association with the Kiewit Building Group and the Martin Army Community Hospital at Fort Benning, Georgia. In a joint venture with Gilbane Building Company, the company has already constructed the Fort Belvoir Community Hospital in Virginia.
