The Governments of Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador have announced that they will jointly invest $1.3 million for the construction of a new affordable housing for seniors at Corner Brook Parkview Apartments.
Ten affordable housing units will be provided for independent seniors. While the Government of Canada will contribute $649,000 for the construction, the governments of Newfoundland and Labrador will contribute $664,000 towards this initiative. This project is part of the extension of the 2009 Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Affordable Housing Agreement.
All the three governments are contributing a total of $11 million under this program. The housing complex is being developed by Parkview Apartments which is a non-profit subsidiary of the First United Church of Corner Brook. As per the project, the present annex in the church will be renovated into nine two-bedroom units and one single unit. This facility will also contain meeting rooms, accessible washrooms, common areas and general office space. Tenants and visitors will be able to move between floors through an elevator. The volunteer President of Parkview Apartments Matt Churchill has stated that work on the project began two years back and the construction is likely to be completed by 2013. The Government of Canada will invest more than $2 billion in housing through CMHC of which $1.7 billion will be spent for supporting 605,000 families under the current social housing system.
