Westgate Heights Attainable Housing has broken ground on a housing complex comprising 34 units in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The new housing complex will contain 2 accessible units and 32 townhouse units, and the homes will be meant for low-income families as well as families new to Canada.
Kelly Block, Member of Parliament for Saskatoon-Rosetown-Biggar, and Jennifer Campeau, Member of the Legislative Assembly for Saskatoon-Fairview, made the announcement regarding the groundbreaking ceremony on behalf of the Honorable Diane Finley and the Honorable June Draude, respectively.
MLA Campeau said that this new development is the first Saskatchewan initiative to commence under the Investment in Affordable Housing 2011-2014 Agreement. She also stated that the government is happy that this project will help provide housing solutions to meet the unique requirements of Saskatchewan people.
Westgate Heights Attainable Housing will have three-, four- or five-bedroom units. Saskatchewan Housing Corporation is giving $2.5 million from the provincial and federal Investment in Affordable Housing 2011-2014 Agreement to this project. Including the Westgate Heights development, nearly 167 rental units are currently underway in Saskatoon. Westgate Heights Attainable Housing, an organization associated with Westgate Alliance Church, is handling the development.
Frank Jeske of Westgate Alliance Church said that the faith-based organization created Westgate Heights Attainable Housing to make ready the building and handle renting and maintenance of the housing units for low income people. In order to carry out the project, over two acres of plot managed by Westgate Alliance Church are being changed.
Through CMHC, the Government of Canada will invest over $2 billion in housing this year and of this, $1.7 billion will be used to help nearly 605,000 households residing in the existing social housing.
