Taubman Centers to Break Ground on New Shopping Center in San Juan, Puerto Rico

Taubman Centers, a real estate investment trust based in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, will break ground this summer on a shopping center measuring approximately 640,000 sq. ft in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The Mall of San Juan, formerly called Plaza Internacional, will be a two-level mall featuring a 100,000-square-foot Saks Fifth Avenue and a 138,000-square-foot Nordstrom. It is expected that the San Juan project will also comprise a Crowne Plaza hotel and casino that will be developed by New Century Development, Inc. The Mall of San Juan will be the first and only spot in Puerto Rico for Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom. It will be the island’s first upscale shopping center.

The Mall of San Juan will include over 100 restaurants and specialty stores and about 60% of them are expected to be new to Puerto Rico. The $405-million shopping center is designed in such a way to reflect the heritage and culture of San Juan with a contemporary twist and the architecture of the mall will have a classic character. Quality materials and good finishing of the mall will enhance the shopping experience. The center will have customer-friendly amenities with easy access and parking to enhance the convenience and comfort of visitors.

The shopping center will include exquisite dining and entertainment, the island's high fashion department stores, world-class retailers and a planned Crowne Plaza hotel and casino with 264 rooms. It is situated in the municipality of San Juan and beside the San Jose Lagoon. The mall is expected to be opened in late 2014.
