Carrington College’s Mesquite campus in Texas has received the LEED Silver certification from USGBC. The campus, which was opened on February 27th this year, specialises in dental and medical assisting.
Specific features that helped the campus in achieving this certification are the optimisation of energy through the usage of eco-friendly HVAC, lighting power and other appliances. The new campus has been fitted with low water flow and motion sensing plumbing fixtures and water efficient landscaping. Access to public transportation and providing space for bicycle storage and changing rooms has also been provided.
The college has entered into a four-year agreement with an energy provider to manage energy usage efficiently. Usage of green cleaning products, provision of recycling bins and storage spaces across the campus and usage of local and recycled construction material are the other salient green features of the new building. The college is providing continuous education on LEED and sustainability to its students and faculty.
Towards this end, the college will organise a program expo which will feature special campus tours with stops that highlight green features.
According to the President of Carrington College Tamara Rozhon, the intention behind the new campus was to provide students with spacious and modern classrooms and an opportunity to work in an energy efficient environment. Rozhon added that the LEED Silver certification is an honor and is essential in the college’s sustainability efforts.
