The Village at Market Creek, which is a major redevelopment project, has received LEED-Neighborhood Development (LEED-ND) certification. This is the third project to acquire LEED-ND certification.
The project was funded by Bank of America along with the US Green Building Council. According to the plan, around 84 ac of property will be converted into a cultural village which will consist of commercial, residential and commercial spaces that will be integrated surrounding the Euclid Transit hub.
As part of the plan, around 1,000 quality affordable homes, 250 new businesses, 2,000 jobs, 1.6 million sq.ft for new construction and 5,500 linear feet for wetlands. The planning and processes have been carried out by the owners and residents of the southeastern San Diego community. The project has been recognized by the State for the innovations used and the sustainable features of the development. Non profit organization Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation has worked along with around 5,000 residents of the project in order to convert the widespread blight land into a village that is dynamic economically and fully equipped with homes, services, goods and spaces that are required by the community. Although there are many features to be completed, the project was able to generate $92.7 million in terms of annual economic activity during the year 2010. The US Environmental Protection Agency has provided clean-up grants for the project and it has also been recognized as one of the five “Gold” Catalyst projects by the California Sustainable Strategies Pilot Program.
