Aker Philadelphia Shipyard (APSI), a subsidiary of Aker Philadelphia Shipyard ASA, has started manufacturing one of the two Aframax tankers to be built for SeaRiver Maritime, an US marine affiliate of Exxon Mobil.
The construction of 820 ft long ships, which can carry 115000 t of crude oil, will be completed by 2014.
The basic work for building the ship is in progress after signing the contract in September 2011. The work started by slicing the steel plates at the fabrication shop of the shipyard after a small ceremony. The steel plates will be placed as a part of the tanker’s double hull which provides protection for cargo tanks.
The President and CEO of APSI, Kristian Rokke stated that the work is vital for production in America. The new plasma cutting equipment from Wisconsin was used to slice the steel plates procured from Pennsylvania. Several hours will be spent to weld and fabricate these plates to produce the ship to carry the oil of Alaska.
Jack Buono, the President of SeaRiver said that the Liberty Class project is a representation of the company’s devotion to safe transport. The design incorporating vital technologies are built according to demanding global marine conditions.
