US-based construction company Balfour Beatty Construction has received LEED certification for two of its offices located in the East Coast.
While the company’s headquarters at Bridgewater Corporate Centre located in Fairfax, Virginia received gold certification under the Commercial Interiors rating system, its new headquarters located in Charlotte, North Carolina has received LEED C-I silver certification. The company’s headquarters in Virginia was constructed using the integrated project delivery method. Balfour Beatty worked in partnership with Engineered Systems Alliance and Fox Architects for the design and construction of the company’s office.
The team that was responsible for the integrated project delivery method, have installed systems that help the company to track the amount of carbon emissions and usage of electricity which in turn helps Balfour Beatty to keep track of the amount of energy saved and to come up with new methods of increasing energy saving. The office in North Carolina covers an area of 30,000 sq.ft has now been converted from a knitting mill to office space. The company worked closely with Optima Engineering and architecture firm Gensler with a focus on restoring the historic importance of the site and at the same time adding an innovative touch to the workplace. The main features of the office which earned LEED certification are energy efficient systems, occupancy sensors that shut down lights in unoccupied rooms, energy star appliances, low VOC paint, usage of FSC certified wood, 77% usage of reusable furniture and recycling of 98% of construction waste.
