The American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS), along with the Kawneer aluminum architectural products business of Alcoa, has recently declared the winners of the Crisis-Ready Stadium national student design competition.
Directed by the AIAS, the competition encouraged students to learn about advanced architectural aluminum building products and systems and building materials utilized for civic center, crisis-ready stadium, or arena. The competition was sponsored by Kawneer.
Marking its sixth year, the competition evokes participants to select a city and outdoor sport of their choice. Following the selection, an environmentally sustainable entertainment facility capable of accommodating 25,000 individuals should be fabricated. Furthermore, the students were motivated to design an exterior façade using Kawneer products capable of withstanding extreme environmental conditions, in addition to creating a readily available alternative space to sustain during disasters. The other targets of the competition include the utilization of methods and materials that promote Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.
The panel judges include four architectural professionals who evaluated and validated the resulting project. Selection was made based on the suitable utilization of materials, incorporation of weather-resistant design elements and crisis-ready solutions in the contemporary facilities.
The winners of the competition were John Melby from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee for his remarkable ‘Survivor One’ offering; Advanced Technologies Academy’s Brianna Silva, Miranda Mead, Dana Dimalanta, and Remi Ziems for ‘The Surge’ and the Sun Life Complex presented by Karl Sobel, Rameez Munawar, and David Ensor from the University of Maryland.
