John Duncan, honorable minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, has declared the commitment of Kashechewan First Nation and the Canadian Government to implement a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and Agreement signed in 2007 for a housing project in Kashechewan. The Kashechewan First Nation is a separated Cree community, near the west coast of James Bay, approximately 420 km north of Timmins, Ontario.
According to the plan between both the parties, the Canadian Government will offer a fund of about $3.25 million for two years to implement the MOU and Kashechewan First Nation will work for this housing project. The federal investment from both the parties builds upon the agreement to regenerate a sustainable and healthy community in its current locality.
Minister Duncan stated that the commitment of both the parties will permit the Kashechewan First Nation to address the shortage in their housing. Duncan added that this collaborative working of both the Government of Canada and Kashechewan First Nation will provide significant results for the people located in Kashechewan.
Chief Jonathan Solomon from Kashechewan First Nation stated that they are delighted with their forward commitments on implementing the MOU, which was signed by them with the Canadian Government. Solomon added that the expert tradesmen belonging to their community are permitted to construct high-quality housings for the required people.
The Canadian Government has been providing the targeted infrastructure funds to trigger the economic growth and create job opportunities in the First Nation community and to enhance the lives of people living in the reserve by providing accessible and secured housing.
