Thrivent Financial and Habitat Building Construct Inexpensive Homes

The Habitat for Humanity program and Thrivent Builds have enabled seven more families from Twin Cities to buy inexpensive Habitat homes this year. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has been associating with Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity (TCHFH) from 1991 and has assisted in the construction of 82 homes. Three of the recently built homes were given away in a ceremony held this month in North Minneapolis.

In 2005, Thrivent Financial has extended its long association with Habitat by introducing its Thrivent Builds program. The move considerably increased the quantity of its work with Habitat, which has resulted in the construction of around 2,500 homes globally from that time. During the current year, Thrivent Builds has agreed to fund 164 homes all over the nation valued around $10.4M, which includes $719K spent in the construction of seven homes it constructed with TCHFH.

The Habitat of Humanity model makes it obligatory for homebuyers to perform hundreds of hours of ‘sweat equity’ prior to buying their home. The home buyers agree to the exclusive 0% interest mortgage. In order to keep its home foreclosure rate lesser than 1%, TCHFH has made the homebuyers to undertake a broad range of homeownership training programs before allowing them to buy their home.

Around 50 congregations from Twin Cities participated in the plan of Thrivent Build by contributing money and by providing volunteers to perform work on homes this year. Around 450,000 volunteers from all over the nation have put on around 3 million hours of volunteer work from 2005.
