Dow Coating Materials Offers ACRYSOL Rheology Modifier for Architectural Paints

Dow Coating Materials, a supplier of advanced coatings raw materials, has introduced a new HASE offering called ACRYSOL DR-110 rheology modifier, which provides architectural paint formulators an economical replacement to hydrophobically-modified hydroxyethyl cellulose (HMHEC).

Dow Coating Materials, a unit of the Dow Chemical Company, now offers the innovative rheology modifier for sampling. The company produces the ACRYSOL DR-110 rheology modifier without the utilization of alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEO) surfactants or added solvents. The innovative product is offered in a high-solid, all-liquid form, which can be incorporated during any phase of paint production, including the letdown.

In most of the formulations, the novel rheology modifier develops viscosity with significantly better efficacy compared to either HEC or HMHEC, ensuing considerable cost savings in usage. The innovative product is efficient throughout the complete array of paint bases, from accent to white. At the more demanding higher tint levels of deep colors, the rheology modifier provides a resistance to viscosity loss equivalent to that of HMHEC.

Joan Schuller, who serves as North America General Manager for Dow Coating Materials, stated that the ACRYSOL DR-110 Rheology Modifier combines the advantages of ACRYSOL HASE Associative Rheology Modifiers and the superior properties of ACRYSOL ASE thickeners. The resulting product is a better replacement to HMHEC for thickening a complete array of waterborne latex coatings, from semi-gloss to flat and throughout all binder types, he added.
