Vantage Data Centers’ V3 building in Santa Clara has received the LEED Platinum certification. The V3 building is a 60,000 sq.ft, 6 MW facility belonging to the wholesale data center company.
The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has established the LEED rating system for design and construction of the most energy efficient, highest performing and greenest buildings.
The company has two other projects in its campus, V1 and V2, which are LEED Registered. The campus has a dedicated 50 MW substation and has over 300,000 sq.ft of space. LEED certification of the V1 and V2 projects would lead to the Vantage Data Centers site becoming the nation’s largest data center campus with LEED Platinum certification.
The operating costs of data centers are directly influenced by their energy efficiency. Typical data centers have 2.0 or higher ratings of Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE). This translates into a power transmission loss of over 50%. During commissioning, Vantage Data Centers’ V3 project recorded a PUE rating of 1.29. This means that the 6MW data center would be able to save around $3 million annually in operating expenses.
The V3 project integrated factors including efficient selection of materials, usage of low-toxic materials, strategies for saving water, and responsible practices for site development. The project diverted over 91% of waste and used more than 40% of recycled content. The building complies with guidelines for usage of Energy Star appliances and equipment. The V3 project gained points for its HVAC design, advanced lighting controls, and lighting energy efficiency. It was also awarded credits for addressing environmental concerns and compliance with ASHRAE 55.
