The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has awarded the Silver Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certification to The Athens Group’s Montage Deer Valley project in Park City, Utah.
The Athens Group is a developer of environmentally friendly luxury hotels and resorts. It has designed the Montage Deer Valley along with HKS/Hill Glazier Studio. The Montage Deer Valley has over 66 suites and private residences, and 154 deluxe guestrooms. It features an alpine-inspired spa, indoor recreation areas, space for events and retail shops. The resort’s theme is based on North America’s great mountain lodges and is situated on Deer Valley Resort’s “high ground,” which allows ski-in ski-out access.
The Athens Group had collaborated with Montage Hotels & Resorts in the development of the Montage Deer Valley project, which was once a Daly West Mine site. The contaminated mine was environmentally remedied and then the hotel was built. The resort was designed for sustainability, while having a minimum impact on the environment.
Montage had incorporated a number of sustainable features in its Empire Canyon project, including preservation of open space, usage of renewable energy and minimization of waste. These factors led to its inclusion, in 2007, as the first project in Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA), Environmentally Responsible Redevelopment and Reuse (ER3) initiative.
USGBC’s LEED Certification system considers many factors including site selection, water efficiency, energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality and innovation in design. World-over, less than 100 hotels have achieved Platinum, Gold or Silver LEED certifications.
