Education Realty Trust (EDR), a Memphis, Tennessee-based outfit, declared that it has performed groundbreaking for its proposed Storrs Center, a mixed-use type of town center close to the University of Connecticut. The other participants of the ceremony include Storrs Center master developer Storrs Center Alliance and Mansfield Downtown Partnership.
EDR will build up the first two phases of the construction, which includes one/two/three bedroom apartments and around 290 studios. Each of the proposed apartments will have granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, faux-wood floors and a private laundry. The construction will also include current internet technology and elevators.
EDR is planning to own and control around 290 apartments located in the Storrs Center, which includes offices, restaurants and new retail shops inside the planned community living with conservation area, green spaces and pedestrian walkways.
Storrs Center Alliance will own and manage the retail and commercial space in the construction. A number of national and local businesses have shown interest in renting portions of the 70,000 ft² street level construction in the mixed-use buildings.
The two phase of the Storrs Center construction, which is anticipated to be completed in 2012 and 2013 respectively lie very close and within walking distance from the main campus of the University of Connecticut.
