The Beech-Nut Nutrition declared that its New Amsterdam facility, which comprises its headquarters and production facility, has been LEED certified by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI), thus becoming the first ever LEED certified baby food manufacturing facility in the world.
The new building constructed at a cost of $124 million is located in Amsterdam, NY. The facility, which became operational in June 2010, was designed with energy and water conserving green features to achieve the LEED certification. The installed energy conserving features in the building will save enough energy to meet the energy requirements of over 2,000 people and its water saving features will save enough water, which can be equated to the use of around 10,000 people.
The open floor plan of the construction allows uninterrupted flow of natural light inside the building to cut down its electricity usage and the maintenance free landscaping of the building utilizes waste water.
Beech-Nut Nutrition is a subsidiary of Hero, an infant feeding manufacturing company located in Lenzburg, Switzerland. The company is operating in the USA since 1931 and is one among the leading baby food brands in the country.
