Construction Industry Campaign To Attract The Best and Brightest Students

Over 100,000 eighteen year olds will receive SMS messages from the construction industry as they find out their exam results this week.

ConstructionSkills, the construction Sector Skills Council, is launching a campaign to encourage the brightest and best students to take a new look at the industry. The activity is part of a long-term campaign to make construction a “destination employer” for Britain’s academic talent, demonstrating the wide range of opportunities for graduates. The campaign aims to make future graduates aware of the huge range of technical and professional roles the industry has on offer.

It will also push home the message that some 600,000 people will be employed in technical and professional roles by the end of this year. ConstructionSkills estimates that the industry will have opportunities for an average of 23,500 more people in such roles every year between now and 2008 as 117,500 new positions will be created by planned and new projects.

Nicola Thompson, CITB-ConstructionSkills Communications & Marketing Director, commented: “There are fantastic opportunities for graduates in built environment roles. These range from traditional degree courses such as architecture and surveying to lesser known courses such as building project management or urban and environmental planning. The industry has wider and more varied demands of its employees these days than young people give it credit for.”

“Using mobile phone text messages to reach students getting their exam results means that we can get relevant information to them where and when they are making big decisions about their future.”
