GREENGUARD Announces Student Fellowship

The GREENGUARD Environmental Institute (GEI) announces the Ken Dillon Memorial Fellowship for Indoor Environmental Quality Design.

The GEI will award a $3,500 fellowship to a graduate or undergraduate student selected for their proposed study of indoor environments with a focus on indoor air quality and its effect on health and/or productivity. This award is in honor of Dr. Henry Kenneth Dillon, a founding member of the GEI Advisory Board and Associate Professor of Environmental Health Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). In his 20 years of work at UAB, Dillon was not only a respected teacher and mentor, but also, a leading researcher in the field of indoor air quality.

Additionally, Dr. Dillon was instrumental in the US Department of Housing and Urban Development's (HUD) Healthy Homes Program in Alabama. Dillon studied the effects of indoor pollutants on homeowners, and trained residents to monitor their homes for health hazards, including lead, mold, and chemical asthma triggers.

"Dr. Dillon was a humanitarian who was committed to educating students and his community on the importance of our indoor air quality and its effect on public health. Offering this fellowship in his name, we are endeavor to keep Dr. Dillon's passion alive by encouraging study and progress in this area," says Carl Smith, GEI CEO.

The GEI is seeking student applicants interested in multidisciplinary study of the relationship between indoor air quality and public health in building design and construction. To request an application for GREENGUARD's Ken Dillon Memorial Fellowship, send an email request to [email protected] or call 1.800.427.9681. Applications will be accepted until October 15th at 5:00 p.m. EDT. The winning project proposal will be announced at the 2005 Greenbuild Conference in Atlanta on November 9th.
