KeyBank declared that its recent renovation of three floors in the Higbee Building located at Public Square has been presented with the LEED Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.
The building while continuing to maintaining its inherited appeal incorporates a number of clean energy features such as ventilation systems, computerized lighting and others.
KeyBank utilized the services of VOCON, a local architectural company, to include the necessary green technology features in the building and follow the construction practices that are in conformity with the LEED certification. The energy efficient features incorporated by VOCON in the building include a systematic design to lessen the use of electric powered lights and automatic light controls to reduce the usage of lighting in work places that are close to 15 feet in perimeter from the windows. The other new features include the installation of task lights required for the work spots instead of the closed type of overall lighting. Thermostats are installed at the work-area to permit local control to reduce or increase the heating and cooling requirements in the common areas. An automated power management feature is included to switch off the idle audiovisual systems.
All the HVAC systems installed in the building were cleaned before occupation of the building to get rid of the construction contaminants. The ventilation systems set up in the building are fitted with sensors to monitor the level of carbon dioxide and systems to check outdoor air. During the process of construction, over 95% of the building wastes were recycled at the construction site thus preventing them from reaching the landfills. The building utilized notable portion of materials that are produced by utilizing the recycled materials and a major portion of the materials used in the construction were produced within 500 miles radius of the project site.
